Samsung Galaxy S 2 HD LTE is the world’s first true HD smartphone

My, Samsung has been busy today. Not only have we seen the launch of the Omnia W, today also sees the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S 2 HD LTE Android super phone, in South Korea at least.

The LTE 4G connection is significant, but whats most interesting is the 4.65-inch Super AMOLED screen. Its a massive 1280720 resolution, which is a record for both Android phones and smartphones in general, and the first technically HD (720p) smartphone in the world. At about 316 ppi, that puts it at the same pixel density as the much smaller iPhone 4 but with Super AMOLED skills, were willing to bet itll blow away all the competition.

16GB of storage, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, NFC and an 8MP camera capable of shooting 1080p HD video round off the specs on the Samsung Galaxy S 2 HD LTE, and leave it shaping it up to be the phone to beat so long as it ships.

No word yet on UK availability or any launch date whatsoever, but were chasing details right now.

Hackers assault Al Qaida-linked online forum

Al-Qaida’s top-tier Al-Shamukh chat forum is facing an ongoing electronic attack, that has rendered the forum totally unreachable, according to a terrorism expert.

The attack on Shamukh is similar to one reported in June this year, and first the domain and then subsequently the underlying data server were both taken down separately, Evan Kohlmann of Flashpoint Partners said in an email late Monday.

The difference this time however is that al-Qaida now has an alternate secondary forum to distribute its propaganda and media, known as ‘Al-Fidaa’.

“In other words, shutting down Shamukh is still quite an annoyance, and it certainly causes jihadi webmasters headaches, but it hasn’t had the same effect of gagging al-Qaida’s media machine,” said Kohlmann who has spent over a decade tracking al-Qaida and other terrorist organisations.

Al-Fidaa is not yet under attack, but it would be interesting to see if a similar electronic attack is launched against this forum as well.

The identity of the attackers is still not known, but it looks like someone launched a coordinated assault on the forum that was designed to cripple the whole system, Kohlmann said.

Typically, that’s not the kind of thing that happens because of a lightning strike or a handful of people relying on a tool like LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon), he added.

Unwired View has uncovered a patent from Microsoft describing a modular phone design where a keyboard, gamepad, extended battery or other accessory could be swapped in to alter a phones capabilities.

The slider design features an open area where the keyboard would traditionally be found. That area can be filled with a module that provides a second display, additional battery, game control, or a standard keyboard. Furthermore, except for the battery module, these modules would be able to function without being plugged in, potentially providing control of a smartphone while it is docked at a TV or monitor.

Modular phone designs are not new, and accessory makers already use the dock connection on the iPhone to expand its capabilities.

The theft of secret data related to RSA’s SecurID tokens used by 40 million employees to access sensitive networks likely started with a 13-word email, evidence uncovered through a researcher’s dogged sleuthing suggests.

“I forward this file to you for review,” the unsigned email, sent to four employees of RSA’s parent company EMC, stated. “Please open and view it.”

The never-before-seen email was uncovered by Timo Hirvonen, a researcher with antivirus provider F-Secure, a little more than five months after someone pierced RSA’s defenses and stole undisclosed information related to SecurID. The att
